Torrevieja, situated next to the sea in the south of the Valencian Community, is surrounded by two large natural saltwater lagoons which form the well-ltnown "Salterns of Torrevieja" considered the biggest In Europe. Its climate is dry and equable throughout the year with 360 days of sun and an average temperature of 18C. The town is located at the southern end of the Valencian community and is famous for the two huge saltwater lagoons which surround it. These "Salterns of Torrevieja" are the second biggest in the world and certainly the largest in Europe. The lagoons have been designated as national parks and are an impressive sight, attracting more than 250 bird species including flamingoes. Torrevieja history is based around the salterns and the port of Torrevieja, of general great interest, and the port is one of the most genuine historical sites of the city. Not in vain, this port was host of the more important fleet of sailboats on the entire Mediterranean, conserving active boat even in the present century, conserving the last units and the freshest history of the sailors and pirates that sailed all the seas of the five continents, specially the passages from Torrevieja to the island of Cuba, of which they have left a standing mark in the character of the place.
